Who We Are- Emmanuel United Church
Emmanuel United Church (a union church-American Baptist/ Presbyterian Church U.S.A.) was established in 1974. It was forged from the union of the Presbyterian Church (established in Mechanicville in the 1830s) and the Baptist Church (established in the 1880s). Our church building is the former Baptist Church, dating from the turn of the century. Our congregation is relaxed and friendly, with a small dedicated membership. We are looking forward to continued growth. We have a well-organized Sunday School, with competent teachers. Our Church boards provide active leadership, while planning for our future. Our other Church organizations are vigorous, well supported with shared leadership, covering a wide spectrum of our congregation’s interests. The manse/parsonage is an attractive brick two-story home that is well maintained on the church grounds.
Our congregation is quite diverse in age. We have a large youth population committed to community involvement and missions. Visitors are usually friends or relatives of members, with some coming from contact with previous ministers. Most people who attend live within two miles of the church, some travel 5-10 miles and a few families live within the 10-15 mile radius. We participate in several ecumenical services for the holidays—Thanksgiving, Lenten, Easter Sunrise Service, and an Independence Day service in the city park. We also hold joint services with the Methodist Church in Mechanicville during July and August of each year.
